The Challenge
A pharma lab’s fixtures, worth saving
Quantum Technology was brought in to purchase and remove the laboratory casework and walk-in coolers from the former Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, Centocor Ortho Biomed, in Radnor, Pennsylvania.
Beyond the casework, the job covered transformers, switchgear, 11 walk-in coolers and freezers, and the miscellaneous equipment and fixtures around them — right down to the ceiling tiles and doors.
The Approach
Disconnect, remove, refurbish, resell
Quantum disconnected and removed all of the casework in the facility, including the countertops and overhead cabinets, then refurbished those fixtures and other lab accessories and resold them to other labs across the country. Where the seller of a lab can provide the labor to disconnect the electric and plumbing they will — and where that isn’t possible, Quantum provides those contractors. The 11 walk-in coolers were disassembled, removed and shipped to Quantum’s warehouse, then packaged and resold to other labs or to other sectors such as restaurants and cafeterias, with the compressors marketed and sold alongside the boxes.

Labs inside a hospital headed for demo
Bierlein Companies was hired to carry out a demolition project for Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Included in the demo were several floors of laboratories filled with laboratory casework and fume hoods — all of which had to be disassembled, disconnected and removed from the hospital area under demolition.
The lab equipment was in excellent condition, which opened up a better option than simply demolishing it in place.
The Approach
Quantum bought it — and cleared it for free
Rather than charge for the removal, Quantum purchased the laboratory equipment from Bierlein and performed the decommission and clean-out at its own expense — supplying all the labor, materials, transportation, equipment, tools, supplies, temporary lighting and electrical disconnects at no cost to the seller.
Where equipment is in good shape, Quantum always makes its best attempt to pay the owner for it and include the demo at no charge. Even when a company does have to pay for removal, refurbishing and reselling the equipment to labs across the country beats sending it to landfill.

The Challenge
A storied research campus to empty out
The University of Pennsylvania had bought this former biopharmaceutical research and development facility from DuPont and operated it as a Vivarium, eventually selling the property to E Kahn Development, a real estate investment and development company.
EKD initially planned to turn the 17-acre wooded property into a nursing home or assisted living facility, and engaged Quantum Technology to clear out 97,000 SF of laboratories, walk-ins, animal cages, and electrical and mechanical rooms — leaving the building empty for repurposing.
The Approach
Dismantled and resold — almost everything
Across a 3-story main building, a 40,000 SF Vivarium and seven additional outbuildings, Quantum disconnected the electrical and plumbing, pulled several thousand feet of laboratory casework and removed more than 50 fume hoods.
The removal reached deep into the building’s systems — walk-in coolers, chillers, a Detroit Diesel generator, air compressors, an RO/DI water filtration system, scintillation counters, nitrogen tanks, flammable cabinets and HazMat enclosures among them. Over four months, Quantum dismantled, removed and resold almost everything in the building.

Making room as the lab expanded
PTC Therapeutics is a biopharmaceutical company focused on innovative small molecule and gene therapies for rare gene disorders. As the company grew into its space in Pennington, New Jersey, the older lab equipment needed to be cleared out so newer equipment could be installed.
That meant carefully disconnecting and removing sensitive lab equipment — biosafety hoods, freezers and refrigerators among it — without disrupting the work going on around it.

The Project
Decommissioning a full-service testing lab
Eurofins Philadelphia ran a full-service environmental test lab on Electronic Drive in Horsham — providing analytical chemistry and microbiological services to help companies meet their regulatory and monitoring commitments. When Philadelphia real estate equity firm Velocity Venture Partners purchased the property, the lab had to come out before the space could be repurposed.
In August 2022, Quantum handled all phases of the disconnect — electric, gas and water termination — then disassembled and removed the casework, fume hoods and walk-in. The material was shipped back to Quantum’s Shippensburg, PA warehouse to be refurbished and resold.
