Clear the data center, keep the value
AES, a local environmental company, hired Quantum Technology to decommission the data center in the Blue Cross building in Wayne, Pennsylvania. The brief was simple: clean out the data center, and purchase all of the equipment.
Quantum bought the generators, switchgear, UPS systems, AC systems and all of the data center assets — then used the revenue from that equipment to offset the cost of the decommission.
Handled the hazards, maximized recovery
The generator enclosure was oversized — as it frequently is — so Quantum supplied the crane, riggers and trucking to get it out, draining and recycling the diesel fuel along the way. The FM-200 tanks carry small explosive actuators, and Quantum’s crew is trained to deactivate these before the tanks are disconnected. On the resale side, the later-model, well-maintained Liebert ACs and UPSs moved easily through Quantum’s nationwide network of buyers, older units were broken down for parts, and the UPS batteries were recycled. The Blue Cross switchgear was custom-built and couldn’t be sold as a single unit, so the breakers were sold separately and the rest recycled.

Quantum purchased the full build-out and applied the resale revenue to offset the cost of the decommission.

FM-200 actuators were deactivated before disconnect and the diesel fuel was drained and recycled.

Good units were resold nationwide, old ones parted out, and even custom switchgear gave up its breakers for resale.
