Location: Austin, TX

Type: Data Center Decommissioning

Scope: Dismantle and remove all data center equipment

Duration: 2 weeks

Client: CSC

Quantum Technology was referred to CSC, a global IT services company, to help with their 8,000 sq ft data center in Austin, TX. Their lease had expired and the next door tenant wanted to move into their space. CSC was on the hook for removing all equipment from the site and returning it to original condition. That’s where Quantum came in.
In only two weeks, we were able to do a full disconnect of the site’s Eaton UPS’s, DataAire CRAC units, safely remove and recycle lead-acid batteries, lift all raised access flooring, and otherwise disconnect remaining server cabinets and electrical infrastructure.
There were special challenges associated with this job. Our team’s time in Austin, TX overlapped with the South by Southwest music festival. The festival attracts musical acts and fans from around the world, showcasing 2,371 artists, including 553 from 57 foreign countries.
Over 28,000 visitors flooded Austin, making the removal of the CSC equipment into a logistical nightmare. Streets were blocked off. Trucks had trouble getting in. To cap it off, there was only a small dock and it could only fit straight trucks. Quantum innovated a new technique for loading that successfully navigated the city traffic, and loading limitations.
By removing all the equipment and pulling up the raised floor, we were able to bring the suite back to its original condition when CSC first leased it. We paid them for the equipment and did all the labor for free.
Notably we didn’t put anything in the landfill. Quantum Technology resold all the assets. Even the raised access flooring tiles with major cuts in them, notoriously hard to reuse, were given away to local residents for use as a splash guard for work areas, and flooring. They were greatly appreciative, saying, “We think it’s a good product. It was very well-constructed.” The fibre was given to a local IT maintenance person.

Mark Ranus from CSC:
“I thought the project went well. They did a very thorough job of getting everything out. They had to get everything out down to the concrete floor, removing the raised flooring, all the infrastructure equipment, everything in the data center space. They worked well with the other contractor that was in there, doing other work for the landlord. There was good coordination. They stuck to their time schedule and were very quick to fulfill any financial obligations. They stuck to their word and I would use them again.”

KEY FACTS

Location: Phoenix AZ

Type: Data Center decommissioning, demolition and building clean out

Scope: 120,000 SF Building. Dismantle and remove all data center equipment including switchgear, raised floor, generators, and chillers

Duration: 16 weeks

Client: Fenway Properties

Fenway Properties purchased the old Bank One buildings in Phoenix AZ.  In order to prepare them for renovation, Quantum Technology was brought in to decommission the data center and completely clear out the facility.

Project Details:
25,000 SF Raised Floor. The crew brought the room back to bare walls and floor. Understructure is typically piled up, then loaded in gaylords and sold with the flooring. CRAC units had the Freon evacuated. UPS Systems were electrically disconnected along with Transformers and switchgear. Quantum removed (4) Cummins Generators, 1979, these were sold despite their age. To get the generators out of the building, Quantum had to knock down the outside brick wall and reconstruct the masonry. Fire Suppression tanks were deactivated, palletized and shipped to the recycling facility. Wet Cell Batteries were disconnected with special lifts, Arc Flash suits and insulated tools. The fuel was drained from the diesel fuel tanks and resold as Diesel #2 for construction and farm equipment. All cabling, piping conduit was pulled and recycled. A lot of equipment such as compressors were sold to local businesses.

KEY FACTS

Location: Wayne, PA

Type: Data Center Decommissioning

Scope: Clean out the data center, purchase all equipment

Duration: 1 week

Client: AES – Blue Cross

AES, a local environmental company, hired Quantum Technology to decommission the data center in the Blue Cross building in Wayne PA.  Quantum bought the generators, switchgear, UPS systems, AC systems and all of the data center assets.  We used the revenue from the equipment to offset the cost of decommission.

Project Details:
The generator enclosure was oversized which is frequent. Quantum supplied crane, riggers and trucking. Quantum drained the diesel fuel and recycled it. The FM-200 tanks have small explosive devices on them called actuators. Quantum crew is trained to de-activate these before the tanks are disconnected. Liebert AC’s and UPS’s that are later model and well maintained can be easier resold through Quantum’s nationwide network of buyers.  Old units might be broken down for parts. The UPS batteries were recycled. The Switchgear at Blue Cross was custom built, and could not be sold as one unit, so the breakers were sold separately, and the rest was recycled.

Project Details:
The generator room was completely dismantled, and the generators resold. The room was brought back to bare concrete. The tanks had to be disconnected and lifted by crane over the retaining wall. Quantum drained and resold the diesel fuel. Beneath the raised floor panels, the understructure was reinforced with earthquake resistant braces.  Everything was meticulously dismantled and removed. Several truckloads of batteries were removed and shipped to recycling facilities.  Chain of Custody is provided on request. Quantum deactivated, disconnected and recycled several thousand pounds of halon. Liebert CRAC units were air cooled, so the R-22 was reclaimed and recycled. LeFrak

KEY FACTS

Location: NJ

Type: Data Center Decommissioning

Scope: Decommission of 100,000 square feet of data center and colocation facilities on 3 floors.

Duration: 3 weeks

Client: LeFrak

When LeFrak, a worldwide leader in real estate development, took over as managing agent of 111 Tower Square Plaza in Jersey City, they hired Joe Ryan of Ryan Real Estate who partnered with Hidalgo Communications and Atlas Communications to rebuild and market approximately 100,000 square feet as data center and colocation facilities.

The first task was to clear out 3 floors of old data center infrastructure equipment left by Morgan Stanley, a former tenant of the building.  The clean out would both prepare the floors for build out, and make them presentable to prospective tenants.  Ryan Real Estate recommended that LeFrak use  Quantum Technology.

The scope involved the removal, sale and recycling of close to 1000 data cabinets and racks, the pulling back of extensive fiber and cable runs, and proper terminating of subfloor electrical connections.  The cable extraction and termination beneath the raised floor was particularly sensitive. If any cables were not pulled or properly terminated, the subsequent activation of those lines could cause electrocution or fire. Quantum completed the job in 6 weeks. The material was sold or recycled, and the job was completed at no cost to LeFrak.

LeFrak hired Quantum Technology several more times to remove switchgear and other data center assets including raised floor, CRAC units, UPS systems, electrical panels and switchgear.  All equipment and material was either resold or recycled.
