Turner Construction for ASCO

KEY FACTS

Location: Florhamn NJ

Type: Data Center Decommissioning

Scope: Disconnect and remove UPS Systems, CRAC’s Halon tanks, 16K lbs Batteries, Commercial Kitchen equipment

Duration: 1 Week

Client: Turner Construction for ASCO Corporation

Turner Construction was doing an interior demolition of the old ATT Shannon Labs building in Florham Park, NJ for Jones Lang Lasalle, who had just sold it to ASCO, the world’s leading manufacturer of power transfer switches.  Quantum Technology was invited in to purchase the assets and decommission the data center equipment.  While we were there we purchased and resold UPS equipment, Liebert air conditioners, PDU’s, transformers, fire suppressant, and the cafeteria equipment as well.

Project Details:
There was a full company cafeteria in the building. Quantum removed and resold counters, sinks, ovens and refrigeration. Ask us about used cafeteria & food service equipment. The detonators on Halon tanks can explode if not deactivated and and handled properly. Quantum Technology technicians are trained in deactivation and removal. All halon is recycled. Sealed lead acid batteries are a hazard. When strung in a series there is enough voltage to burn, break bones or kill a man.  Quantum technicians wear Arc Flash suits, used special insulated tools and mats. Don’t hire a company unless they are trained and experienced in handling. There was plenty of electrical equipment, conduit and cable to decommission. Check out the picture of the ceiling. Most new tenants do not want old fiber, cat cable and power cables. They prefer to run their own brand new material. Call Quantum for cable removal.

Viacom Data Center

KEY FACTS

Location: Secaucus, NJ

Type: Data Center Decommissioning and building gutting

Scope: Remove generators, disconnect electrical, remove huge glycol system, tear out the whole data center, remove inside brick partition walls. Make the space ready to build out.

Duration: 6 weeks

Client: CPR

In 1988 Viacom built a 107,000 square foot data center facility in Secaucus NJ.  Eventually the building was purchased by CPR, a real estate investment company, who hired Quantum Technology to gut the data center and bring the building back to a point where it could be repurposed and re-leased.  Quantum claimed we could do the job for free and use the assets to pay for the labor, trucking, warehousing, rentals, machinery, admin time, insurances, etc. and make a profit.  Chesky, the owner, said afterwards (loosely quoting).. “you have a great talent where you can turn almost anything into money. I don’t know how you do it. I know how to buy properties and turn leases and sales into money. But I would love to learn how to do what you do.”  Chesky’s terrific, and a good friend.  We did 3 more projects for him after that, hopefully more to come.

Project details:
We brought in our electricians to trace all of the wiring. It was a 4 day job. Viacom had layered and layered the wiring over a number of years and we weren’t able to find any blueprints. This is sometimes the case with older data centers. Once we had the wiring mapped out we were able to do the disconnects. We could have brought in a glycol tanker to pull the glycol out of the building, but instead we drained it into 255 gallon totes for refining and reselling. Our crew tore out the entire data center, including floors, ceiling, piping, cabling, equipment. Everything was resold or recycled. We sold 3 generators from the property. Two of them were 13,200v Caterpillar generators that we sold to a cement company, along with the medium voltage switchgear and controls. We had to open up the side of the building to remove them. We drained the underground tank, and did all of the research to have the tank dug up and certified removed. The crew removed glass partition walls and drywall, including brick walls. We subcontracted with a company to re-pipe the air handlers of the building. A previous vendor had taken a generator on the side of the building, but left the base tank and enclosure. We could not find a home for them, so we cut them up and scrapped them as metal. All the dry coolers were resold, as well as the many UPS’s, switchgear, cabinets, and other data center related items.

Lincoln Harris Corporate Services Group hired Quantum Technology to decommission and liquidate a former SunGard Data Center on the 8th floor of a busy Philadelphia downtown office building.

Project Details:
Assets included several Eaton Powerware UPS systems, switchgear, transformers, CRAC units, several hundred data server cabinets, raised floor and all piping and cabling beneath the floor.  Quantum purchased the assets from Lincoln, and provided all the labor at no charge, making it a profitable transaction for both parties.  After the data center work was complete, Quantum went on to purchase various equipment that was stored in the basement of the building, such as large breakers left there by Digital Realty in days gone by, and huge fans.  Many times, buildings wind up to be storehouses for facility equipment that never quite gets deployed.  Because Quantum is primarily an asset recovery company, we will always try to purchase assets from our customers, whether for resale, or, if not salable, then recycling.

Fiserv

KEY FACTS

Location: Philadelphia PA

Type: Data Center Decommissioning and Interior Demolition

Scope: Remove Floor, all cabling, all equipment, non load bearing walls, bring space back to original condition

Duration: 6 weeks

Client: Fiserv

Quantum Technology was invited to do a walk-through along with various Philadelphia trades, to bid on the decommission of the Fiserv data center on Market St. in Philadelphia.  The equipment was quite old and did not have strong resale value. As a result, Quantum, like the other bidders, submitted a charge to perform the clean-out and interior demoliton, but because of Quantum’s ability to monetize the assets, the charge was significantly less than the trades.

Project details
One of the complications of the project involved layers upon layers of cabling beneath the floor, much of which was set in place by various tenants who occupied the space before Fiserv.  Many of the connections also affected other suites in the building. In addition to working closely with the building electricians, Quantum also worked with the building mechanics to make sure no leaking occurred during the removal of the CRAC units.  Demolition and recovery included 125 server racks, 60,000 square ft of raised floor, cabling, piping, CRAC units, PDU’s, fire suppression tanks, cubicles and partition walls.  Fiserv was extremely pleased with Quantum’s work and went on to hire Quantum for many more projects around the country.
