Quantum made an offer to Sprint to purchase the assets from their data center at 5295 Brook Hollow Parkway so they could return their leased space in its original condition to the building owner.  After continued negotiations, Sprint made arrangements with the owner to leave the data center intact and vacate the property.  For the next few years the building was marketed as a fully equipped data center property, with a brief lease to a Bit Mining company who, unfortunately, was not able to make their lease payments. As the property expenses continued to mount and the building was not selling as a data center, the private investor who had purchased it from Sprint  contracted with Quantum to decommission and purchase the assets. The idea was to raise much needed cash and give the property a cosmetic boost.  The investor would then re-market the property as an attractive Corporate Campus.
The old Sprint data center assets included:
(3) Caterpillar 2mW generators with paralleling gear
(2) 10,000 gallon diesel fuel tanks with 6,000 gallons of diesel fuel
(4) Outdoor 400 ton Chillers
(8) Liebert UPS Systems
(20) Chilled water CRAC units
(12) RPP’s, (12) PDU’s, (12) Air Handlers with VFD controllers
(4) Battery rooms with 240,000 lbs of Lead Acid batteries and a fairly large quantity of both ferrous and non-ferrous scrap
The idea of this project was to create as much return for the owner as possible through the sale of the assets;  provide electrical, mechanical, rigging and demolition services at no charge; and make the property presentable for sale. Quantum used their own electricians to de-energize the systems without disabling building power.  This required re-wiring the building fire alarm, and trouble shooting lighting problems in the data center.  Quantum removed walls, racking and piping.  The removal of air handlers left (12) 30 square foot holes in the raised floor system which Quantum reconstituted by providing additional floor structure and filling in with raised floor panels.  The work included patching walls and repainting. Quantum also removed around 700 badly de-laminating floor tiles and replaced them with comparable tiles to eliminate tripping hazards. In the end, the private investor/owner was extremely satisfied, and felt Quantum had greatly assisted in creating a path forward towards selling the property.

BASF Data Center

KEY FACTS

Location: NJ

Type: Data Center Decommissioning

Scope: Electrical installation

Duration: 3 weeks

Client: Bromag

Quantum recently signed a contract with Bromag, a NJ based demolition company, to purchase and remove the complete electrical infrastructure from the previous BASF facility located in Mt Olive NJ.

In its heyday, the facility boasted 3,000 employees, but when BASF moved their headquarters to East Hanover NJ, the 5 building campus sat vacant for almost 30 years.  It is now being demolished to make way for a 600,000 SF distribution center.

Scope for Quantum was 4 buildings to disconnect, rig, remove, and transport the bulk of the equipment back to out 200,000 SF warehouse.  Amongst other challenges, the Quantum crew removed an 11,000 lbs. substation through the roof of the Penthouse.

Although Quantum Technology has its own demolition projects and full scale data center decommissions capabilities, the company also works with other demo companies and owners to monetize the electrical and mechanical assets.  Quantum does this, by purchasing them, doing the disconnect and removal, then shipping them back to our Shippensburg and Philadelphia warehouses where they are refurbished and resold on the used market. Quantum currently stocks over 80,000 pieces of equipment, and has completed well over 4,000 unique projects.

Client: Holding Source LLC

In 1982 MichCon, Michigan’s Consolidated Gas Company, built a state of the art 72,866 square foot data center at 5225 Auto Club Drive. The data center was upgraded again in 1994, after being purchased by Affiliated Computer Services, and shuttered in 1997 resulting in a layoff of 120 workers.  The legacy data center was recently sold to Holding Source LLC, with the aim to redevelop the property. Holding Source LLC has built and developed a huge amount of property in Dearborn and is definitely one of the premier pillars of the community.

Quantum’s mission was to create several hundred thousand dollars of cash for Holding Source by decommissioning and reselling the assets from the data center. Quantum has recently opened a division to specialize in difficult to acquire Switchgear, Electrical panels and Pad Mount Transformers.  Due to supply chain constraints since Covid, lead times are unbelievably long and prices are through the ceiling. Quantum stepped in to fill the gap. With 2 warehousing facilities, one in Shippensburg and one in Philadelphia PA, Quantum is able to inventory a tremendous amount of equipment and offer it to companies across the country at competitive prices. Data Center jobs like this one allow Quantum to recover infrastructure equipment and put it back into productive use.
