Sprint Norcross Data Center

Case Studies/Data Center Decommissioning

Clearing a fully-equipped data center — at no cost to the owner

When a private investor needed to turn an idle, fully-built Sprint data center back into a marketable property, Quantum purchased the assets and handled the entire decommission — generators, chillers, UPS systems, and roughly 240,000 lbs of batteries — in four weeks.

The Challenge

An idle data center the market had passed by

Sprint had left the facility behind fully intact, and the owner spent years marketing it as a turnkey, move-in-ready data center. A short-lived cryptocurrency-mining tenant defaulted on payments, and with carrying costs climbing and no data-center buyer in sight, the investor decided to sell off the equipment to raise cash and reset the building — so it could be re-marketed as a corporate campus.

Clearing it was anything but simple. The building was still live, with four battery rooms, 2 MW generators and paralleling gear, fuel tanks holding diesel, and a raised floor packed with CRAC units and air handlers. All of it had to come out without cutting power to the building — and the space had to be left clean, not gutted.

Our Approach

Bought the assets, cleared the building, restored the space

Quantum contracted with the investor to decommission and purchase the equipment — so the entire electrical, mechanical, rigging and demolition scope was delivered at no charge to the owner, offset by the value of the recovered assets. Quantum’s own electricians de-energized each system in place while keeping the building’s power on, then crews removed the generators, chillers, UPS systems, CRAC units, PDUs and air handlers.

Removal was only half the job. Quantum rewired the building fire alarm, troubleshot the data-center lighting, took out walls, racking and piping, patched and repainted, closed the raised-floor openings left behind, and replaced roughly 700 delaminating floor tiles — handing back a clean, show-ready space.

240,000 lbsLead-acid batteries recovered

Across four battery rooms, Quantum safely removed and recovered roughly 240,000 pounds of lead-acid batteries — alongside three 2 MW Caterpillar generators, four 400-ton chillers, eight Liebert UPS systems and twenty CRAC units — turning stranded infrastructure into recovered value.

Scope of Work

A full decommission, handled end to end

From de-energizing live systems to repainting the walls, Quantum carried the entire scope in-house — removal, recovery, and restoration.

✓De-energizing live systems without cutting building power
✓Electrical, mechanical, rigging & demolition
✓Generator, chiller & UPS removal
✓CRAC units, PDUs, RPPs & air handler removal
✓Battery-room clearance — ~240,000 lbs recovered
✓Fire-alarm rewiring & lighting troubleshooting
✓Wall, racking & piping removal, patch & repaint
✓Raised-floor closure & ~700 floor tiles replaced

The Outcome

Stranded assets turned into a fresh start

The investor came away able to raise cash from the equipment and hand the market a clean, ready-to-show building.

Zero cost to the owner

The full electrical, mechanical, rigging and demolition scope was delivered at no charge, offset by the value of the assets Quantum purchased.

Power never interrupted

Quantum’s electricians de-energized each system in place, so the rest of the building kept running throughout the decommission.

Restored and resale-ready

Walls patched, raised floor closed and retiled, lighting and alarms squared away — the space was handed back clean and ready to re-market.
