Case Studies/Laboratory Decommissioning

Clearing the way for a growing biopharma lab

As PTC Therapeutics grew into its space in Pennington, Quantum disconnected and removed the older biosafety hoods, freezers, refrigerators and lab equipment — making room for new equipment and sending the used gear on to a second life.

The Challenge

Making room as the lab expanded

PTC Therapeutics is a biopharmaceutical company focused on innovative small molecule and gene therapies for rare gene disorders. As the company grew into its space in Pennington, New Jersey, the older lab equipment needed to be cleared out so newer equipment could be installed.

That meant carefully disconnecting and removing sensitive lab equipment — biosafety hoods, freezers and refrigerators among it — without disrupting the work going on around it.

The Approach

Disconnected, removed, and given a second life

In July 2022, Quantum completed the disconnect and removal of the biosafety hoods, lab freezers, refrigerators and lab equipment. Rather than scrapping it, the used equipment was slated to be refurbished and resold to other labs nationwide.

✓Biosafety hood disconnect & removal
✓Lab freezer & refrigerator removal
✓General lab equipment removal
✓Refurbishment & resale to labs nationwide

The Outcome

Space ready, equipment reused

The older equipment came out cleanly, PTC’s space was ready for its new installation, and the used gear was routed back into service elsewhere.

Room for new equipment

With the older equipment cleared out, PTC’s growing lab was ready for its newer equipment to be installed.

Sensitive gear handled with care

Biosafety hoods, freezers and refrigerators were disconnected and removed without disrupting the active lab around them.

Reused, not scrapped

The used equipment was slated for refurbishment and resale to other labs across the country.
