Data Destruction

Does your company have lots of sensitive data? We all do. Whether it is trade secrets, personal employee information, private communications or financial data, you need to make sure that your end-of-life hardware cannot be scavenged for the important intelligence stored on it. It is not sufficient to drag said items into a trash bin and hope for the best. Even after attempts to remove or erase data, residual representation on your servers and drives persist. Information that you thought was long gone can be recovered, and can lead to the disclosure of sensitive information should the storage media be released.

How it works.

Quantum Technology specializes in a variety of techniques to make sure your data is permanently deleted. In addition to performing a complete destruction of your storage media through shredding (and providing certification that the equipment no longer exists), we can also use overwriting, degaussing, and encryption to make sure your sensitive data is gone. Degaussing is the removal of a magnetic field of a disk using a degausser device. This method is powerful, sometimes leaving the storage device itself inoperable but ensuring that all information is permanently wiped quickly and effectively. Overwriting is a method that maintains the integrity of the device while making sure that your information cannot be recovered. Normal deletion keeps the information on the device, just hidden. Overwriting records random 1s and 0s over that information so that it can never be brought back. Many experts believe that overwriting is 100% effective with economist Daniel Feenberg at the National Bureau of Economic Research calling the chances of overwritten data being recovered from a modern hard drive an “urban legend.” Still, organizations like the NSA opt for complete destruction or degaussing just in case.

Quantum Technology also provides certification and complete records detailing all data destruction processes. We comply with the following standards:

  • NIST 800-88 standards
  • DoD 5200.22-M data sanitization
  • FACTA Disposal Rule
  • PCI Data Security Standard
  • Bank Secrecy Act
  • Sarbanes-Oxley Act
  • Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act
  • All other relevant Federal, State, local and industry regulations
