UPS’s: What are they good for?
The main purpose of a UPS is to provide instantaneous power when your main power system experiences a failure. Unlike generators, which take time to startup, UPS’s run on batteries and eliminate any downtime. This is essential when you’re providing a mission critical or emergency service. Hospital respirators, or critical data systems, can’t be down for even a few minutes. The UPS bridges the gap between your initial power failure and when your generator kicks into high gear.
What kinds of UPS’s are there?
In addition to a variety of popular manufacturers (Liebert, MGE, APC) and brands (Symmetra, Comet, Silcon), different UPS’s come in an array of sizes and features. Some things to consider when purchasing a UPS are how much power you need it to provide, and how long you need it to provide that power before your main backup source can be activated. There are three general categories of modern UPS systems: on-line, line-interactive, or standby.
Offline/Standby UPS’s offer basic features: surge protection and battery backup. When the incoming voltage falls below or rises above a predetermined level, the UPS turns on its internal DC-AC inverter circuity which is powered by internal batteries (often located in a specialized battery cabinet). Line-interactive UPS’s work similarly, but with the addition of a multi-tap variable-voltage autotransformer. This kind of UPS can handle continuous undervoltage brownouts and overvoltage surges without consuming reserve battery power. Instead, it selects different power taps on the autotransformer. In an online or double-conversion UPS, the batteries are always connected to the inverter, so no power transfer switches are necessary. When power loss occurs the rectifier drops out of the circuit and the batteries keep the power steady and unchanged. Its main advantage is providing an electrical firewall between the incoming utility power and sensitive electronic equipment.
